Houston bars, music halls, clubs, and even music stores have birthed many musical talents. Whether it’s rock, country, rap, pop or any other musical genre, Houston musicians are at the forefront.
It’s hardly surprising that a city as large and diverse as Houston has produced some of the best musical talent in the country. Such artists like Lyle Lovett, Beyonce, ZZ Top, Win Butler (Arcade Fire), and Clint Black are just a few of the numerous musical icons birthed by Houston.
Here are four of the top places for live bands in Houston:
1. Anderson Fair
A haven for original, eclectic tunes performed largely by Texas singer/songwriters. The Montrose restaurant & bar was a popular spot for artists such as Lovett as they gained popularity in the 70’s & 80’s. But the tradition continues as Anderson Fair offers a platform for balladeers with a unique sound.
2. Cactus Music
This iconic Houston music store plays host to singer-songwriters most Saturdays. One notable draw to Cactus Music is that it’s FREE. And you get to sip some St. Arnold’s suds as well!
3. Dan Electro’s
This is as good as it gets for dive bars in the Heights. Enjoy the quintessential rocker’s vibe with darkly lit interior, rough-around-the-edges crowd, and large back patio. The tunes here are reminiscent of yesteryear: 70’s early 80’s. The brews are cold and true, the wine…not so much. You can bring your own liquor and get a set up if that’s your thing.
4. Dosey Doe
An old tobacco barn converted into one of the most iconic music venues in Houston has hosted Mel Tillis to Clint Black and Jerry Jeff Walker. And the food here is “cooked from scratch.” Crowd favorites like: Gulf shrimp pasta and crab cake salad along with a full bar and coffee shop make this experience one that you will long remember.
