When Severe Weather Threatens and What to Do About It

Texas is big. The United States is even bigger. If you travel long enough and far enough, sooner or later, you will encounter severe weather conditions, in Texas or elsewhere. You want to stay safe in your RV. Here are a few tips from the folks at Quality RV Resorts to help you arrive and thrive.

Monitor the Weather to Plan Ahead

Plan ahead for the possibility of severe weather conditions. The first step is to get a battery-operated or hand-crank NOAA radio. These special radio receivers are tuned to receive only the 7 frequencies of NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) broadcasts. NOAA broadcasts warnings and watches for severe weather, earthquakes, avalanches, AMBER alerts, and man-made disasters 24/7. These radios are available at ‘big-box’ stores and Amazon. Get one.

Severe Weather Supplies

You may find yourself on the road when severe weather strikes. Keep these supplies on hand to be able to withstand most* storms…

  • Plenty of water
  • Plenty of food for people and pets
  • First-aid kit
  • Fire-starting gear
  • Flash light
  • Propane and fuel

  • Raincoat
  • Blankets
  • Snow gear
  • Small saw, in case you need to cut firewood
  • Multi-purpose shovel, in case you need to dig the RV out of mud

*Tornados are the Exception

If a hurricane is expected, have an evacuation plan. If extreme heat is likely, do not leave pets in the RV or vehicle. If flooding is in the forecast, FEMA maps show the probability of flooding at your destination.

But if a tornado is expected, go the nearest solid building and take shelter there with your family and pets. Do not stay in the RV or vehicle. Neither the RV nor the car is a safe place in a tornado.

If you are nowhere near a solid building, take your family and pets and go to a low-lying area such as a ditch, gully, or ravine and lie flat. Protect your head and neck with an object or with your arms. Avoid areas with many trees.

With any luck, severe weather will not impact your stay at your favorite Quality RV Resort or Park. Contact us with any questions or concerns about the weather or your up-coming visit. The friendly folks at Quality RV Resorts are always happy to help. Stay safe and come see us!
